We live in a world where communications and travel have become so accessible that it's no longer uncommon to meet a friendly neighbour from the other side of the world or to chat to your parents in the UK while lying on the beach in Brazil. More than ever, we are realising the importance of understanding how other people see the world and the value of learning new languages.

Of course, there are lots of reasons why people learn new languages. Some people choose to learn the language of their ancestors, others learn a new language to be able to enjoy books and films not available in their own language. Other people learn a new language to get a particular job or to be able to access a new market where they can sell their products. Learning a new language makes you more articulate, keeps your brain in shape and can even help you get an exotic boyfriend or girlfriend - what more could you possibly want?!

But Which One Should We Pick?!

Well, it depends on what you want to achieve. For those wanting to continue the family tradition or access foreign media, the decision is easy.

Make sure your wardrobe matches your words.

If you want to appear mysterious or exotic, the choice can be more tricky. When it comes to seduction, the usual suspects are:

    • Portuguese - a particularly sensual language, it rolls off the tongue invitingly; possibly the sexiest language of all.
    • French - considered the language of love and romance by almost everyone and you can combine it with a bohemian look if you have the right wardrobe. Before you rush out to enrol at the local French language school however, consider travelling abroad. While there are other places you can learn the French language France is the home of the language of love.
    • German - the sleeper option you probably weren't expecting; the language is melodic and produces textured sounds that can give you an exotic allure.

For people who see language skills as a means to the top of the business ladder, some research into favourable markets is required. Although Chinese and Arabic courses are becoming more and more popular, students in the EU concerned about career advancement generally choose to learn Spanish, French, German or Portuguese.
